Shelby Energy is a not-for-profit utility company that was created by and for the members we serve. Unlike investor-owned utilities, if Shelby Energy takes in more money than needed to pay the cooperative's bills, your member-selected Board of Directors will elect to share the excess revenue back with our members when the cooperative's financial situation allows. We call this refund a "capital credit". The amount of the refund that members of Shelby Energy Cooperative receive is determined by the amount of electric usage over time. The more electric power used by each member, the more capital credits each account accrues and the larger the refund will be throughout the years.
This year, we are returning capital credits for the year 1987 and a portion of 2020 totaling $216,682.25 in refunds. If you were served by Shelby Energy in those years, you are eligible for these capital credits. Members can expect to see their refund as a credit on their bill or, in some cases, by check in the mail in late December or early January. You do not need to do anything to receive your capital credit. They are automatically provided to eligible members.
It is very important that we have the updated mailing address and contact information for our members and former members in order to process these refunds. Please use SmartHub to update your information or call our office at 800-292-6585.
*Refunds of any accumulated capital credits are payable to the estate of deceased members. Application for this can be made by visiting www.shelbyenergy.com/capitalcredits.
